Community Spaces
VMDO’s designs for community spaces celebrate the culture and uniqueness of a place in order to inspire visitors and users to experience community and embark upon communal goals.
Inspiring Connection
Our deep roots in campus and precinct planning lead us to envision individual facilities or structures as part of a larger whole – a whole whose constituent parts work together for the greater benefit. As such, integrated landscapes, city-wide interconnectivities, and community interfaces are all critical strategies that shape our work. Our mission as community-centered architects is to create collaborative, inclusive, equitable, and healthy community and recreation spaces for a diversity of locales, municipalities, and communities.
Celebrating the Uniqueness of a Place
From local parks and contemplative spaces, to police stations and transit centers, to city-wide stadia and pavilions, VMDO understands the variety of human-scaled, environmental, and aesthetic considerations that go into creating places that are functional, beautiful, and expressive of a community’s values and ambitions. Facilitating shared experience among community is one of VMDO’s design tenets, and we are nimble and diligent in gathering broad buy-in to ensure a building is well-loved and used well throughout its life. Through thoughtful programming, we strive to create connections between the indoors and outdoors, areas for communal connection, access to nature, and a sense of place that is welcoming, generous, and representative of the community.
Turning Challenges into Opportunities
Community spaces often involve programmatic and operational creativity as well as intensive collaboration in order to fulfill stakeholder wishes along aesthetic, budgetary, and operational lines. VMDO is skilled at building consensus by carefully listening to client concerns, providing a variety of site and building options, and working across disciplines to maximize synergies. Through creative problem solving, we work with communities to transform constraints into opportunities. By designing in an intentionally communal way, we strive to create authentic places that benefit communities while expressing the unique vision or legacy of a place.
