Environmental Graphic Design

Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) has the power to educate, motivate, inspire, and inform. VMDO provides in-house signage, wayfinding, educational signage, exhibit, and graphic design services for public institutions. EGD participates across each of VMDO’s studios to enhance projects through graphic communication for a more holistic design approach that enhances the user experience.

Like VMDO’s architectural educational projects – which offer a deep commitment to healthy, happy, and forward-looking learning environments – VMDO’s wayfinding and signage projects, too, support teaching and learning aims through environments that inspire and educate.

EGD lives at the intersection of communication design and the built environment through an interdisciplinary process that conveys stories, activates spaces, supports navigation, educates learners, and engages users in their surroundings. Content and context clues guide user interaction with a particular space and inspire connections. Each project, regardless of its building type, has a relation to its natural environment, history, and geographic context. Pulling from a place’s context and inherent stories can help differentiate that place and connect users, through design, to something that they can relate to, be inspired by, and remember.

VMDO applies a user focused approach to EGD that goes beyond graphic communication and navigation to support a larger vision of spacial interaction. This approach has helped create effective communication while engaging, and often times educating, users as they interact with a VMDO building.

In terms of services, VMDO offer a range of graphic communication services including ADA/code signage, wayfinding design, large scale graphic design, educational signage, exhibit design, building signage, exterior signage, donor recognition, and environmental branding. Each client and project is unique in terms of needs and vision. To bring these visions to life, we provide a full range of design services – from programming, conceptual design, schematic design, design development, final artwork, and bid documentation to construction administration services involving bidding, shop drawing review, and installation with quality control.
