James River Green Building Council recognizes Poquoson Elementary School

VMDO Architects presented Merit Award at Second Virginian Go Green! Competition

May 20--The James River Green Building Council awarded a $10,000 building grant and seven awards to projects in central Virginia that support principles of sustainability.

The council is a regional chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council aimed at promoting awareness of energy efficient and sustainable development.

The Piedmont Housing Alliance of Charlottesville won the grant money for adding a modular green roof and a solar hot-water heating system to an affordable housing project.

Winners of the Second Virginia Go Green Competition in the unbuilt category were:

--The Learning Barge, a research barge on the Elizabeth River, by the University of Virginia School of Architecture -- honor award. --Poquoson Elementary School by VMDO Architects of Charlottesville -- merit award. --New offices for Monarc Construction Inc. in Falls Church by Studio 27 Architecture of Washington -- merit award. --Littlemore residence in Albemarle County by Watershed architects in Richmond -- merit award.

In the built category, the following projects were honored:

--The Seam House in Charlottesville by the University of Virginia School of Architecture -- honor award. --Lowe residence in Albemarle County by The Gaines Group in Charlottesville -- merit award. --Roanoke & Lee Street Duplexes in Blacksburg by Community Design Studio in Christiansburg -- merit award.

A total of 15 projects were entered. The entries were judged by a panel of four people from the Raleigh, N.C., area.

The judges were architects Sarah Susanka, Frank Harmon and Tim Martin, and Isaac Tanzarella, a mechanical engineer.
