The renovation of the University Commons at George Mason University revitalized a complex of buildings into a welcoming and comfortable home for its 500 freshmen and sophomore residents. The centrally-located complex of seven residence halls and a commons building, University Commons is a valued resource for the students of George Mason University.

All of the buildings were extensively renovated to attain a similar level of quality as the newly constructed residence halls nearby. Common spaces on each floor of the residence halls were outfitted with new interior finishes, lighting and digital displays. Existing bathroom facilities were completely renewed, inside and out, adding fresh color and texture to the halls.

Meanwhile the addition to the central Hanover Hall includes a new multipurpose room and classroom space which will provide formal and informal spaces for students to gather. The multipurpose room is a generous and inviting space that provides opportunities for various scales of social and academic communities to collaborate, perform or simply relax. The existing building was reconfigured to create an open, light-filled recreational lounge, dining area public kitchen. Renovated offices and a seminar room support expanded academic program in the building. The terraces extend out to a major pedestrian street, giving students an outdoor space to sit, read and engage with those passing by.
