As the University of Virginia’s College at Wise anticipated unprecedented growth, the College transformed from a community predominated by commuter students to one with a rich residential life. The construction of Henson Hall, a new 116-bed residence hall, was an important element in supporting that growth.

Henson Hall has 60 double rooms, in pairs, with a shared bathroom. A larger building lounge and mezzanine study lounge serves the Henson Hall and three adjacent halls which were built without common spaces. Strategically located floor lounges serve smaller communities of 20-24 students whose rooms surround them.

The new building sits at the base of a steep slope up to the main academic quadrangle. Its site begins to define a lower residential lawn space which anticipates the addition of two more residence halls. A pedestrian walk makes a strong connection to the existing student union and dining hall.
