Matthew Johnson

Matthew Johnson joined the VMDO team after graduating from the University of Virginia in 2017. During his time in college he cultivated a passion for travel, design research, and digital fabrication. He has done architectural research and design work on-site in locations ranging from Charlottesville to Ethiopia to the High Arctic. Matthew has participated in numerous conferences and seminars focused around architectural robotics and other forms of digital fabrication, including the ACADIA conference and the 2016 Robots in Architecture Conference in Sydney, Australia. The combination of these experiences has given him an intense interest in how new technologies and new ways of making will impact the real-world practice of architecture.

Matthew plans to attend graduate school for a Master’s Degree in Architecture after enriching his academic interests with several years of work experience. He finds great joy in designing and making, both within and outside the context of his work at VMDO.
