A graduate of Virginia Tech’s Architecture and Industrial Design programs, Shawn joins VMDO with 18 years of experience in architecture, historic preservation, furniture design, and marketing. A detail-oriented architect, Shawn provides intuitive drawings, coordinated design documents, and clear communication to manage expectations, schedules, and budgets. He builds professional relationships based on trust and mutual concern, often resulting in life-long friendships. As an active mentor and connector, Shawn finds joy in meeting and training talented designers, connecting them with opportunities to grow, and celebrating their success.
Enthusiastic and curious, Shawn enjoys learning from clients, builders, and craftspeople about how things are made and the strategies they use to succeed, then applying these lessons in his own life and built environment. He believes successful projects spring from good relationships, direct communication, and a willingness to follow good ideas no matter the source.
Shawn began his career at OMA in Rotterdam, NL contributing to the design of Universal Studios Headquarters and researching innovative materials and technologies for projects including the Prada Flagship Store in New York, Seattle Central Library, and the Netherlands Embassy in Berlin. In Washington, DC, he gained experience in residential architecture, construction, and project management, while designing and marketing award-winning furniture for education programs in museums and libraries. For 13 years at Dalgliesh Gilpin Paxton Architects, Shawn lead a range of projects across the US, from conception to completion, including high-end residential, commercial, and historic preservation.
