Georgia Tech Glenn + Towers Residence Halls
VMDO re-imagined how the two residence halls could create a living-learning environment befitting the needs of Georgia Tech’s students while making a positive contribution to the campus precinct.
Project Details
- Client: Georgia Institute of Technology
- Location: Atlanta, GA
- Scope: Renovation and Addition
- Completion: 2015
- Size: 109,214 SF
- Performance: LEED Gold | EUI 55 kBTU/sf/year (modeled) | 31% reduction (regional CBECs 2003 Residence Hall baseline)
The Glenn and Towers Residence Halls at Georgia Tech are the hub of the Freshman experience, helping residents build a personal and academic connection to their school community. The LEED Gold revitalization of the halls includes the retrofit of the existing attics into student rooms, the addition and reconfiguration of study rooms and lounges, and the construction of a central connector building.
Because of steep grade change, the quad of Glenn and Towers was completely cut off from the surrounding campus, leaving it disjointed and largely forgotten. Carefully orchestrated outdoor spaces and circulation wed the new construction to existing infrastructure and enhance the campus precinct. Designed in partnership with Stevens & Wilkinson, the design improves connectivity and removes barriers to the way students interact.
The design of the glass-wrapped connector building bridges the quad and street landscapes and showcases a multitude of student social and academic activities. The east-west circulation links living and learning programs and facilitates relationship building between residents. Students can safely traverse the residential complex and utilize the various public resources without leaving the security of the halls. Abundant transparency on the interior allows study rooms, classrooms, and fitness spaces to be visible from the central circulation spine. Flexible furnishings in the large lounge spaces contribute to an agile, lively, and comfortable atmosphere. The revitalized Glenn and Towers Residence Halls create a social hub on campus that fosters a lively student living and learning experience.
As subject matter experts on residential and student life facilities for colleges and universities, the VMDO team was a delight to work with. They were excellent listeners and communicators, successfully facilitating and documenting meetings in a timely manner with the large and diverse group of stakeholders who were involved throughout the duration of this project. Their innovative design alternatives were always responsive to the programmatic needs of the project and the historic campus character of this precinct of campus, while being sensitive to the project budget and schedule.
