- Scope: Renovation
- Completion: 2016
- Size: 10 Acres
Originally constructed by the New Deal’s Work Progress Administration (WPA) in 1939, Lynchburg City Stadium provides combined baseball and football facilities for the city. The baseball field is home to the Lynchburg Hillcats, a class A minor league team, while the football field hosts Lynchburg City Schools’ football, lacrosse, and soccer teams. The City of Lynchburg was interested in solutions for updating building standards while retaining the original charm and architectural integrity of the stadium.
The new entry plaza draws spectators into the stadium and frames the stunning city and Blue Ridge Mountain views beyond. A large entry gate, canopy, and ticket booths welcome visitors to the game. Exhibits and memorial plaques explain the history of the complex and honor athletic legacies. The strong visual connection to the larger regional topography of Virginia is an important characteristic of the stadium, with its design intentionally framing panoramic views of the city and mountains.
Located behind the stands on both sides of the stadium, the concourse offers space for visitors to stretch their legs and conveniently access bathrooms and concessions. The concourse concentrates the energy and activities of the stadium to a centralized location, which also supports improved safety and security. Below the concourse are new locker facilities which contain team lockers, meeting rooms, showers, bathrooms, and lockers for coaches and officials.
