The Biological Sciences Building at Old Dominion University is a new facility to serve the teaching and research programs in the Biological Sciences and College of Sciences. As a replacement for the aging and outdated Mills Godwin Building, this new facility is designed with a diverse and entrepreneurial student population in mind.

Designed in partnership between VMDO and Ballinger, the Biological Sciences Building is an open, bright, transparent complex that explores the intentional collaboration between students and faculty through shared instrumentation spaces. Labs are designed for maximum flexibility, allowing research spaces to shrink and grow as necessary with limited impact on resources. Instructional spaces, offices, classrooms, and study areas support exploration and student development outside of the research lab. Designed with resilience as a primary driver, deep pile foundations address flood risk management by moving vital programming above the projected base-floor height.

The new home for the Department of Biological Sciences engages the current and future problem-solving generations in real group research projects. The new facility also blurs the boundaries between distinct areas of research including Biomedical, Environmental, Ecology, Botanical, and Wetlands. The building will also house greenhouse facilities for the Kaplan Orchid Observatory.

The new Biological Sciences Building will exemplify the outstanding educational and research opportunities available to the ODU community. Students will enjoy state-of-the-art teaching laboratories and classrooms, sources to support student success, and inviting spaces for gathering with friends. Faculty will have cutting-edge research laboratories and core equipment to support their work. Working together, faculty and students will transform the educational experience through hands-on, practical, and impactful projects.
