VMDO Architects is leading the design of Roanoke College’s Shaun McConnon Discovery Center, a transformational facility that will support student-centered learning, interdisciplinary scholarship, and community well-being. Located on Roanoke’s historic campus, this innovative building will replace Massengill Auditorium and become a light-filled and amenity-rich bridge between the existing Life Science and Trexler Halls. The result merges contemporary architectural design with advanced learning spaces to serve future generations of scientists, researchers, and innovators.
The Discovery Center will feature modern laboratories, collaborative workspaces, and technology-rich fabrication and visualization labs to advance the study of biology, chemistry, environmental science, physics, and engineering. A large general classroom paired with a generous study commons overlooking the quad will create a social home for the entire science community at Roanoke College.
With sustainability at the forefront, the design emphasizes natural light, energy efficiency, and flexible lab spaces that adapt to future scientific advancements. A multi-purpose rooftop terrace and vegetated roof shaded by a solar canopy offers a unique opportunity for outdoor learning, large events, or casual connection to nature and view of the Blue Ridge. The new Discovery Center will serve as a vital hub for scientific inquiry, reflecting Roanoke College’s mission to provide a transformative education grounded in hands-on learning and real-world impact.
The new Science Center is a game-changer for Roanoke College. It will allow us to attract top students and faculty, while giving our community the tools to address the scientific challenges of tomorrow. This facility will provide our students with unparalleled opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research and prepare for successful careers in an ever-changing world.
