Project Details

  • Client: University of Virginia
  • Location: Charlottesville, VA
  • Scope: New Construction
  • Completion: 2013
  • Size: 80,800 SF
  • Performance: LEED Certified

The University of Virginia’s Indoor Practice Facility houses a full-size football field with two end zones and five-yard run-offs. Other sports or recreation activities that align with occupant load and activity restrictions also use this facility to support team practice and training.

The Fieldhouse allows adequate indoor facilities for football and other field sports to practice at all times, including during periods of inclement weather. The Fieldhouse was sited on an existing football practice field to take advantage of adjacent locker rooms, offices, and other support facilities already provided in the nearby McCue Center.

Specifically, the Fieldhouse is 400’ x 200’ with an arched roof form that is approximately 65’ at its highest point. The single story, open volume facility features a small central platform for viewing by coaches and filming. The building envelope contains brick corners with precast concrete copings and sills; overhead aluminum and glass doors at entrance bays; metal panel and louver infill; storefront and acrylic glazing systems; and a standing seam metal roof.

This project is functionally compatible with adjacent athletic facilities and playing fields. The arched roof form reduces the apparent scale of the building and its proportions, materials, and details overall create a visual and harmonious connection to nearby John Paul Jones Arena and other buildings part of the Athletics Precinct.
