The new Western Loudoun Recreation Complex defines a new civic hub for physical activity and community gathering. As the first recreation complex in Western Loudoun County, the project significantly expands local access to social and wellness programming that previously required traveling long distances. A master planning effort supplements the 96,000 SF recreation center, transforming the 142-acre site with athletic fields, park amenities, safe transportation, and improved stormwater infrastructure. Additional site features include sports courts, a rock-climbing wall, an outdoor fitness area, and a diving pool. Master planning for the complex is also allocating space for future community resources, including a 40,000 square foot library facility and other potential site improvements.
The programming and function of spaces focus on serving this specific community of Loudoun County. A diverse array of community spaces makes up the main center, including both recreation and aquatics components and complete with a gymnasium, kitchen, fitness center, multi-purpose rooms, and running track. The Aquatics Center is comprised of a competition pool, leisure pool, spa, wet classrooms, splash play areas, and associated support spaces.
The aesthetic quality of the design draws from the rich landscape and vernacular history of Western Loudoun County, with materials, form, and an architectural language that capture visual associations with a modern interpretation. Sustainable design strategies offer a comprehensive approach to building performance, occupant health and wellness, and stewardship of local ecosystems.
