The Patriot Center first opened in 1985 and is the home of George Mason University’s basketball teams. Along with hosting sporting events the arena is a premier venue for touring musical acts and other performances from around the country. The arena is also host to local high schools’ annual commencement ceremonies. The 10,000 seat arena recently underwent a major renovation to improve its concourse level by adding new concessions, bathrooms, and a hospitality area. Previous studies and planning have focused on larger scale additions as well as code and mechanical renovations.
The scope of this study was to examine and identify opportunities for improving the event level of the Patriot Center. Team locker rooms, coaches’ offices, and training facilities were all in need of improvement and upgrades. Along with renovations to the basketball amenities the study also sought to improve storage capabilities, hospitality accommodations, visitor dressing rooms, and provide new offices for the arena and building operations staff.
