At the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the campus tells a story of transformation.

Set within the dramatic topography of Southwest Virginia, UVA Wise has evolved from a small regional college into a distinctive liberal arts institution – one defined by close community, strong identity, and a deep connection to place. As the College looks toward 2035, that trajectory continues with a new campus master plan that reinforces what makes Wise exceptional while positioning it for the future.

A Campus Shaped by Its Landscape – and Its People

From the beginning, UVA Wise’s physical environment has been inseparable from its mission. Earlier planning efforts established a framework that embraced the site’s natural terrain—organizing the campus into “upper” and “lower” zones connected by a unifying spine and a network of pedestrian pathways.

That vision helped transform the campus into a more connected, residential, and student-centered environment – supporting significant enrollment growth and a stronger campus identity over time.

Today, the 2035 Master Plan builds on that foundation.

Strengthening the Core of Campus Life

The plan reinforces the heart of UVA Wise by strengthening the academic core, enhancing pedestrian connectivity, positioning buildings as hubs of student life, and preserving the surrounding landscape.

Designed for the Future of Learning

The plan prioritizes flexible, technology-rich learning environments, active collaboration, informal student interaction, and faculty engagement.

A Legacy of Transformation

Previous projects (including the Student Center, Science Center, Multipurpose Arena, and residence halls) helped shift UVA Wise into a vibrant residential campus.

“What has always been remarkable about UVA Wise is its ability to grow without losing its sense of community,” said Joe Atkins, Principal at VMDO. “Over the years, each project has built on the last – strengthening the campus and creating spaces where students feel connected.”

Looking Ahead to 2035

The 2035 Master Plan provides a framework for future investment, supporting growth, adaptability, and long-term stewardship.
