University of Richmond Basketball Practice Facility + Well-Being Center

Complementary Programs Combined in One Central Location

By embracing the connections between health, wellness, fitness, nutrition, and sport, the University of Richmond is sending a powerful message with their new Basketball Practice and Well-Being Center. This unique project is poised to create a comprehensive center for students that will align programs supporting both high achievement and a well-balanced life on campus. Nestled between Millhiser Gym and the Weinstein Center, the location provides an opportunity to build a distinctive new building on campus that mends together aspects of the site and makes critical new connections. Guided by recent planning efforts, VMDO created a vibrant, hybrid building that honors the distinctive collegiate gothic heritage that is the hallmark of the University of Richmond.

Successful Contextual Design: Traditional Values and Transformational Strategies

The design takes cues from Ralph Adams Cram’s architectural vision for a campus embedded in the wooded Virginia countryside. Respecting the enduring principles of mass, material, expression, and detail that lay behind that vision, VMDO designed an addition within historic contexts that is characterized by a deftness in internalizing the underlying historic influences at play on campuses. With special attention, for refined contextual design and architectural craft – the solution reinforces the strong tradition of carefully-scaled quads that so artfully organize campus.

Deep Understanding of Design for Athletics and Health + Wellness

The Practice Facility celebrates and builds on the legacy of an institution while conveying principles of integrity, passion, and perseverance to student athletes and attendees. The facility will play an integral role in taking the University of Richmond basketball programs to the next level. The Well-Being Center provides a balance of health, wellness, and socializing opportunities that maximize student engagement. The design strategies embrace the paradigm shift of promoting well-being and the ‘whole student’ versus patient care / treating illness and support the University’s position among forward-thinking institutions of higher education. Effective arrangements of thoughtful program spaces and multi-disciplinary collaboration combined with an abundance of daylight, interior gardens, and the expression of natural materials enhance the spirit of well-being.

"We realized our students are trying to check off all of these academic boxes. But when they graduate, they often can't check the box that says, 'I was happy and healthy and left school knowing how to cope with stress and other life challenges.' We want the overall student experience to be successful and purposeful, and the Well-Being Center is one way to do that."
