The renovation of the 3rd floor of Innovation Hall on GMU’s Fairfax campus involved updating a once static, fixed academic interior space into a dynamic, flexible, and collaborative learning environments for GMU students. Collaborating alongside programming and strategy firm brightspot strategy, VMDO created signature informal learning environments by transforming a large fixed-seat computer lab into a flexible computer commons and by providing informal gathering and collaboration spaces that support academic study and start-up “maker spaces” for students.
Working with GMU’s Division of Instructional Technology (DoIT) and Information Technology Unit (ITU), the VMDO team identified appropriate instructional and general technology and ensured all needed infrastructural updates were incorporated in the design / construction package for appropriate specification.
The first M.I.X. facility to be completed on the Fairfax campus, the renovation of Innovation Hall supports the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas in order to help inventors, start-ups, artisans, and entrepreneurs find their place and voice, both at Mason and in the marketplace.
Innovation Hall is now a showpiece for flexible arrangements that support technological connectivity and collaboration amongst peers in an interactive atmosphere that is tailored to meet students’ needs.
