Spuhler Field was built in the mid 1980’s, with the first pitch in a stadium configuration occurring in the spring of 1986. When constructed, several key amenities were omitted. Likewise while the field has had at least one major rejuvenation in that time, the competition space has remained essentially the same since its construction.
VMDO designed a facility that will support Mason’s growth well into the 21st century and allow GMU to host regional NCAA Division I competitions. Services include crafting an ultimate vision of program, services, and facilities for the stadium and preparing a phased development plan. The stadium will provide many amenities including restroom facilities, concessions and support facilities (including a media space), and revamped existing backstop and seating areas behind home plate that will include covered areas. Major field improvements include possible lighting, turf, fencing, and a new scoreboard.
Shortly after VMDO was awarded the Spuhler Field project, our team also received an Athletic Term Contract request to conduct a Patriot Center Space Usage Study. This study investigated functional and logistical improvements that will need to be made to the aging Arena.
