The Multipurpose Arena is home to intercollegiate, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball at UVa’s College at Wise. Sized to accommodate the increasing popularity of these programs, the anticipated growth in student enrollment and in the local community, the facility was designed as a flexible venue to accommodate a great variety of programs, functions and attendance levels.
In addition to entertainment and athletic events, the venue supports the activities of summer camps, campus gatherings, graduations and other College and community special events. Available to local schools and organizations, the Center strengthens local athletic, cultural and entertainment programs, which in turn, build community support. This project serves as a multipurpose, regional amenity and has benefited both the local economy and the College.
The design of the Multipurpose Center embodied the values and aspirations held by the University of Virginia and the College at Wise. The facility features amenities essential to high quality entertainment and outstanding athletic performance.
Though the scale is more modest than UVa’s John Paul Jones Arena, the facility inspires the same pride and excitement within the community and among College recruits, players, coaches and fans.
“The project has been a real success story. The team of Steve Dempsey, Tom Leback, VMDO Architects, and Quesenberry’s has done a remarkable job, and have been a model of positive teamwork.”
